SINGAPORE : Singapore is the first in Asia to host a competition to choose the region's best koi.
Organisers are expecting 1,500 fish during the three-day show which begins on Friday.
Seventeen judges, including 12 from Japan and five from the rest of Asia, have been flown in for the competition.
The koi are categorised into 14 sizes and 16 varieties. About 800 trophies will be given away.
This is the biggest such show outside Japan. It is also the first time 10 Asian economies, including China, Indonesia and the Philippines, are taking part in the show.
Fifty booths will be offering koi and koi-related accessories at an exhibition, which will be held at Singapore Expo Hall 3 from May 2 to 4.
Another highlight is an auction on Saturday of some 50 top-quality koi that are a year old. They are each expected to fetch between S$500 and S$5,000.
However, the main focus of the competition will be on who gets to be declared the Grand Champion of the 1st Asia Cup Koi Show.
Jerry Chan, Chairman, Singapore Koi Show, said: "We always look for the size... the skin quality of the koi... The pattern is also important. The fish must also have an 'imposing' look." - CNA/ms
