Tharman to attend ASEAN finance ministers, ADB meetings on May 4-5

SINGAPORE : Minister for Finance, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, will be attending the 11th ASEAN+3 Finance Ministers' Meeting and the 41st Asian Development Bank (ADB) Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors in Madrid from May 4-5.

Mr Tharman will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

The ASEAN+3 finance ministers will discuss regional financial initiatives, including the creation of a multilateralised Chiang Mai Initiative (CMI) lending facility to address short term liquidity crises in future.

The talks will also include a new roadmap for the Asian Bond Markets Initiative (ABMI) to streamline ongoing efforts to strengthen regional bond markets.

The ADB Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors will discuss issues affecting the region, including the current risks posed by a global economic slowdown and inflation.

The meeting will also go through the ADB's annual report for 2007 and the ADB's Budget for 2008. - CNA/al
