More than 500 athletes take part in sprint duathlon

SINGAPORE: More than 500 athletes took part in a sprint duathlon on Sunday morning.

It is the second race of the year in the Tribob Singapore Sprint Series.

The runners got off to a quick start in the race around Upper Seletar Reservoir. As the sun shone down, hundreds of pairs of feet pounded the tarmac for a three-kilometre run.

After that, it was time to switch to pedal power. With a quick change from running to cycling shoes providing only a brief rest, the athletes were on their bikes for a 15-kilometre cycle.

The athletes then changed back to running shoes for a second three-kilometre run to the finish line.

Frenchman Sebastien Calle held on to an early lead to win in 48 minutes 55 seconds.

"I did an Ironman run seven weeks ago, so I had a lot of base training. So for me today, it's just a speedwork training and just for fun, and I really enjoyed it," he said.

New Zealander Kelley Toy was the fastest woman competitor, finishing in 53 minutes 42 seconds, a time achieved through hard work.

"It's a lot of training, early starts, eating lots, eating and sleeping a lot," she said.

The Tribob Singapore Sprint Series biathlon was first held in April, and the triathlon will be held next month. - CNA/ac
