SINGAPORE: Myanmar nationals in Singapore have been busy trying to help their countrymen back home after the Cyclone Nargis disaster.
As getting in touch with their loved ones in Myanmar has been near impossible, some have resorted to booking a ticket to fly home in order to find out if their families are safe.
Since Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar last Saturday, more Myanmar nationals have turned up at their usual meeting place at Peninsula Plaza.
One of them, Maung Tin Phyo, said: "My eldest son is here in Singapore, but my younger son and my wife are in Yangon. I don't know how they are. I don’t know what my government is doing either. They are never kind to our people."
Another Myanmese, Ko Lay, said: "My company is in Yangon. I want to go back and see my family, and to see what has happened to my country."
As for those who have chosen to remain in Singapore, they are digging into their pockets to help raise funds.
Khin Than Htwe said: "The first time I heard the news, I prayed hard for all the people. I see (pictures of) the survivors on the internet and I want to help them. I've asked my friends to help them too, that's why we are here."
"A lot of people have been asking how they can donate, that's why we have put up a box (for donations)," said Soe.
So far, the Myanmar community here has raised over S$2,000. They said the money will be sent back on a regular basis, so that those back in Myanmar can buy food and clothing.
