SINGAPORE: The labour movement paid tribute to 208 workers at its May Day Model Workers Awards this year, the highest number of awards given out so far.

The exemplary workers were selected from among 440 nominations submitted by employers. They received their awards from Acting Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is giving the awards to recognise the workers for their contributions to Singapore's economy and their commitment to lifelong learning.

There's been an increase in the number of women and older workers among this year's recipients.

The number of women awardees was 43 per cent this year, compared to 39 per cent in 2007. Workers over 50 made up 38 per cent of this year's winners.

Meanwhile, 21 companies received the May Day Company Commendations, for their efforts to push for a more inclusive workplace. - CNA/vm
