SINGAPORE: Bartenders are usually the first point of contact for customers enjoying a drink at bars or restaurants. And now they are being roped in by the Bartenders Association and Bacadi-Martini Singapore in the latest drive against drink driving.
Derrick Lee, President, International Bartenders Association, said: "We teach them the origin of alcohol, an understanding of alcohol - that is the most important thing, because you know the alcohol that is safe for human consumption is ethanol alcohol, and how it is produced."
Ian Davidson, MD, Bacardi-Martini (Singapore), said: "Most alcohol is consumed in bars and restaurants and is actually served by bartenders. They are the first point of contact with the customers. And it is important they understand correct and responsible consumption."
Four such workshops are organised by Bacardi-Martini Singapore for bartenders, and other service staff. Two have already been conducted.
Bartenders also learn how to stop over-drinking, without offending customers like suggesting taking some food and water to help the situation.
And if a customer insists on drinking, this experienced bartender has this solution.
Edward Lim, Assistant General Manager, The Marriott Singapore, Basement, said: "What I would do is I would give you a larger glass that has the same amount of alcohol, but has more fluids, more liquids. So it takes you a longer time to drink it and you are not drinking it as fast."
Even world racing champion Michael Schumacher has been roped in to promote Bacardi's worldwide campaign.
And in Singapore, the company is offering a ‘Drive Home Service’ which chauffeurs you home in your car.
The S$15 service will be available for a two-month trial period at selected downtown areas like Tanjong Pagar, Boat Quay, Circular Road and Kampong Bahru, from 9pm to 3am. - CNA/vm
