SINGAPORE : The OSIM Singapore International Triathlon is aiming to reach a new group of participants, and families are being targeted this time round.

Over the years, the Singapore International Triathlon has been growing in popularity and attracting more converts.

In 2006, organisers started the First Tri Club, and last year - the Kids Tri Club.

Back for the 7th year, its latest initiative - the Family Tri Club - encourages participants from 3 generations, where grandparents can compete together with their family members.

Organisers are also looking to move the race to Marina Bay by 2009 or 2010.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth & Sports, Teo Ser Luck, a triathlete himself, was all for the changes, especially since triathlon can be a showcase sport for the Youth Olympic Games. He feels Singapore should participate in all of the 26 sports at the Youth Olympics.

"Participation is more important than the triumph itself... Because we are trying to promote Olympism, I encourage more participation, (and not) just competition," said Mr Teo.

As for the Singapore Triathlon, the number of participants will be capped at 3,800 for safety reasons. Organisers said safety is paramount for such endurance races, which has seen untimely deaths recently.

As this year's race targets a wider group of participants, risks are also higher, especially among the elderly. So as an added precaution, organisers are encouraging all participants to go for a medical screening before the race.

The event will be held at the East Coast Park from July 12-13. And to add to the glam factor, current Miss Singapore, Jessica Tan, will be taking part in the race for the first time. - CNA /ls
