SINGAPORE : Five Justices of Peace (JP) have been appointed as magistrates to preside over cases at the new Neighbourhood Court, which begins functioning on Thursday.

The new magistrates appointed by President SR Nathan are Mr Woo Tchi Chu, Mr Lee Chow Soon, Mr Toh Weng Cheong, Mr Shriniwas Rai and Mr Ajaib Haridass.

All are senior lawyers with several years of experience in different areas.

Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong announced the setting up of the new Neighbourhood Court during the Subordinate Courts Workplan Seminar last week.

The court will hear disputes between neighbours which have increased over the years. - CNA/ls
