SINGAPORE: Some 98.4 percent of students in Singapore complete at least 10 years of education. And 93 percent of them progress to higher levels of education.

The statistics were revealed by Education Minister Ng Eng Hen in his speech at the Israeli Presidential Conference on Thursday.

Dr Ng, who is also the second Defence Minister, told his audience in Jerusalem that Singapore graduates are highly employable.

Over 93 percent of students who graduated from universities and polytechnics secured a job within six months of graduation.

Those from universities earn a starting salary of about US$2,000 and those from polytechnics receive US$1,400.

Those who graduated from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) were also employed within six months of graduation, with an average starting salary of US$1,000.

Dr Ng's speech was entitled "The Role of Education in Meeting Future Opportunities and Challenges: Perspectives from a Small Multicultural Country."

He said that in Singapore, there are 530,000 students, aged 6 to 18, in 354 schools.

The teaching force is about 29,000 and Singapore spends 3.3 percent of its GDP on education. - CNA/de
