SINGAPORE: In a new record for a Southeast Asian painting, a contemporary painting from Indonesia fetched over S$450,000 at a Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong last month.
Observers said collectors are turning their attention to Indonesian contemporary art because they are relatively cheaper.
To ride on this trend, the National University of Singapore Museum is holding an exhibition of paintings by pioneer Indonesian contemporary artist, S Sudjojono. This is the first time the artist's works are being showcased outside Indonesia.
The late Sudjoyono began producing contemporary works in the early 1930s and many said he was a big influence in elevating modern Indonesian art by reflecting the voices of the society.
Sixteen pieces from up-and-coming artists are also on display at the exhibition, which will be held till August. Admission is free.
Wang Zineg, a curator, said: "Sudjoyono would be considered an important modern artist of his time if people pay attention to his works and begin to study him.
"I hope by placing Sudjoyono alongside contemporary practitioners today, we (will be able to) see the relevance of art from the past."
