SINGAPORE: The Singapore Red Cross on Friday sent close to S$700,000 worth of emergency relief items to Myanmar.

The items comprise 1,000 tents, 35,000 ready-to-eat food packs, over a million water purification tablets and 10 units of hand-powered water purification systems.

These items were received by the Myanmar Red Cross for survivors of Cyclone Nargis.

Three liaison officers from the Singapore Red Cross, who arrived in Myanmar on Tuesday, were at the airport to receive the relief items.

They have been working together with their local counterparts to sort out the delivery of emergency relief items.

They are also working on the request for an eight-man medical team from Singapore to be deployed.

The Singapore Red Cross said that the most urgent needs for affected areas are shelter, clean water, food, and first aid materials.

To date, the Singapore Red Cross has received a total of S$1.8 million through cash and cheque donations. - CNA/ac
