Singapore Buddhist Lodge to build quake-proof schools in Sichuan

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Buddhist Lodge plans to co-fund the building of earthquake-proof schools in Sichuan province.

These schools will also double up as disaster shelters.

The Lodge has been involved in building schools in rural China for more than 20 years.

And now, with the help of a S$2 million donation from a local philanthropist, and close to half a million dollars from public donations, the Lodge plans to build earthquake-proof schools in Sichuan.

It hopes the Chinese government will match the contributions dollar-for-dollar.

And to ensure prudent use of funds, it is monitoring relief and rebuilding efforts, and will work with the Chinese government to find suitable building sites.

Lee Bock Guan, President, Singapore Buddhist Lodge, said, "Regarding the donations we've received, and the resources we have, we have not set a donation target amount. In the Buddhist religion, we believe in fate. So we will work with the resources given to us." - CNA/ms
