SINGAPORE: Women took centrestage at a Sembawang GRC healthy lifestyle event on Sunday.

Over 6,000 women and their families – along with Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan and Law Minister K Shanmugam – started the morning with a 'detox dance'.

Sembawang GRC Women Steering Committee, which is the main organiser of the event, said many women do not pay enough attention to their well-being and this could affect the health of other family members.

The committee hopes that through free eye-checks, blood tests and bone scans, more women will understand the need for regular check-ups.

Women were also the target of a recruitment drive at the event, which offered over 800 vacancies in industries like retail, manufacturing and healthcare.

And ahead of the Vesak Day celebrations on Monday, Mr Khaw said the twin tragedies in Myanmar and China reminded one of the uncertainties in life.

"Vesak Day is the time to think about why we are here and how we should spend our lives. My personal advice is to spend your life helping others."
