SINGAPORE: Over S$550,000 was raised at the Assisi Hospice Charity Fun Day on Sunday, exceeding their target of half a million dollars.

The money will allow the hospice to expand its core services of in-patient care, home care and day care.

Ms Ho Ching, wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the patron of Assisi Hospice, joined over 12,000 members of the public at the charity carnival for a day of good food and good fun.

Organisers said with a growing demand for its services, every dollar donated counts.

Last year, the hospice saw over 1,000 patients – an increase of nearly 200 from 2006. This year, it expects to spend over S$6 million on improving its programmes.

A third of that amount will be covered by government grants and revenue, but the remainder of S$4 million will have to be met through donations.
