SINGAPOPE : Mercy Relief has on Sunday personally delivered and distributed its first batch of relief supplies to the affected areas in Sichuan - namely the Disaster Management Centres at Mianzhu and Shifang counties, and Jiulong Township.

The food supplies worth S$20,000, include mineral water, milk, biscuits and instant noodles. These were distributed to 10,000 people. The supplies were procured locally which means Mercy Relief could save costs on freight costs.

The distribution was conducted with its partner, Sichuan Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (SFPA). This was done in close consultation with the Deyang Prefecture Poverty Alleviation Bureau and the Disaster Management Centre to appropriately address the real needs on the ground and delivered the aid supplies in a timely manner.

Mercy Relief will be delivering 500 tents and more food supplies to the survivors of the earthquake on May 21.

Mercy Relief's Director of International Programme, Chia Hui Yong, has been on site in Chengdu assessing the ground situation and procuring relief supplies for distribution to the victims since last Friday, 16 May.

Mercy Relief's representative on the ground said aid efforts remain a challenge as there are still many strong aftershocks in Sichuan daily.

Mercy Relief received S$22,000 on Monday from the Singapore Sikh Welfare Council to support its relief efforts in China and Myanmar. It donated S$11,000 to the China earthquake relief fund and S$11,000 to the Myanmar relief fund.

To date, Mercy Relief has received S$108,972 for its humanitarian aid in China.
