SINGAPORE: Labour chief Lim Swee Say said most grassroots leaders agree that the government's S$3 billion package to fight inflation has helped to offset the higher cost of living.
Mr Lim was speaking at a marine industry event to commend supervisors who have upgraded their skills through the Job Recreation Programme on Thursday.
He said prospects in the marine industry are bright and it is for this reason that Singaporeans – not just foreign workers – should take up jobs in this sector.
Mr Lim added there is a need to better educate Singaporeans about employment opportunities in the marine industry and how to cope with inflation.
He said: "The way we tackle inflation in Singapore is different from other countries. Here in Singapore, we are very clear that high inflation is here today and all of us have to face it because it's a global phenomenon.
"At the same time, we also recognise that if we try to solve the problem of inflation on its own, we are not going to go too far because fundamentally, we have to address the question of economic growth - to make sure the Singapore economy continues to grow and that jobs continue to be created, and that every Singaporean is trained to take on these jobs.
"Only when Singaporeans have a job and salary would they be able to, with the support of the government and the labour movement, cope with this higher inflation."
