SINGAPORE: A new programme has been launched by the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) to equip workers with the right service mindset.
The Certified Service Professional Programme is targeted at some 30,000 workers over the next three years. 40 workers have taken part in the first two pilot runs of this new five-day programme.
Among other things, the programme focuses on transforming mindsets and igniting passion for service.
WDA's Chief Executive, Ong Ye Kung, said trainees must feel they are professionals in their field and be proud of what they do.
He said: "We need to address the need for tourism manpower in a similar way as we address our country's need for water. Both are scarce resources. In the case of water, we rely on multiple taps – our own reservoirs, importing from overseas, recycling waste water to produce NeWater, and desalinating sea water.
"For manpower, we need to recognise there is no single solution. We need to be creative and resourceful, and to rely on multiple sources – students coming into the workforce, the unemployed and economically inactive workers who can be retrained back into the workforce, and foreign workers with the right skills and attributes.
"At the same time, we need to work harder in redesigning jobs, streamlining processes, and leveraging on technology and machinery to raise productivity and ameliorate the manpower crunch."
Singapore's tourism industry needs another 60,000 workers in the next two to three years.
