SINGAPORE : The newly-formed statutory board, Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA), is finalising the legal framework to regulate various aspects of casinos in Singapore.

Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng gave this update when he was speaking at the Home Team Promotion Ceremony on Monday.

Mr Wong, who is also the Home Affairs Minister, said the CRA is fully operational this year.

The CRA was set up to ensure that the soon-to-be built casinos in Singapore remain crime-free.

Mr Wong also praised the cooperation between the various agencies under the Home Team. He said this has led to a big drop in the number of repeat offenders in prison.

The recidivism rate has improved over the years. In 1998, it was at an all-time of 44 percent of the total cohort. But by 2005, it had dropped to 24.2 percent. - CNA/ms
