Police arrest former Singaporean for insulting public servant

SINGAPORE : A former Singaporean opposition candidate has been charged with insulting a High Court judge.

Gopalan Pallichadath Nair, who is now a US citizen, is alleged to have sent out an email containing statements which amount to insulting a public servant.

These remarks refer to an on-going case in the High Court before Justice Belinda Ang.

If found guilty, the US-based lawyer faces a fine of S$5,000 or up to a year's jail - under the Miscellaneous Offences, Public Order and Nuisance Act.

Some of his supporters, as well as US Consul Julie Kavanagh, showed up at the Subordinate Court on Monday.

Mr Nair has been remanded for another week and his case will be heard again on June 9. - CNA/ms
