SINGAPORE : A huge fire engulfed a Woodlands factory at 2.45am on Friday, sending fireballs some 10 metres high.
The factory at Woodlands Terrace stored some 150 drums of natural essential oils used for processing perfumes and food products.
The fire at the factory jolted many residents in the nearby industrial and housing estate out of their sleep.
Tan Song Wa, owner of a nearby unit - Tan Soon Mui Food Industry - said: "We heard a knocking sound, so we all went behind to take a look and saw the fire." He said they heard explosions and in 20 minutes the fire had reached the roof top.
Civil defence officers had to fight the fire which engulfed the entire factory - about the size of three Olympic swimming pools - using 10 separate jets, so that it did not spread to neighbouring units.
Some 60 firefighters battled for almost 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. Within the burnt out building, computers and other machines were badly damaged.
No one was injured and the Singapore Civil Defence Force is investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, some of the contaminated fire-fighting water was discharged into the canal leading to the beach, near Admiralty Road West.
So the National Environment Agency (NEA) has advised the public to avoid these areas, and is monitoring the situation closely. - CNA/ms
