SINGAPORE: Police have revealed further details on the attempted escape of two men who were in custody at the Subordinate Courts. The incident happened on 11 June.
Police said 32-year-old Jamaluddin Salam, and 28-year-old Salman Abu Samah, were at the Sub-Courts for unrelated offences.
They were offered bail and as part of procedures, placed in a cell together with other accused persons.
It was during this time that the men escaped after assaulting a police officer.
They fled the lock-up area and took a lift to the fourth level of the Subordinate Courts, which led to a restricted area. They then forced their way through a locked door and ran down a stairwell to the ground floor public area.
They were subsequently arrested and will be charged in Court on Friday for escape from legal custody and for assaulting a public servant.
Since the escape, police said security at the Subordinate Courts lock-up has been tightened. An additional lock on exit gates have also been installed.
The lift, from which the two men escaped, will also require a key to be activated.
Further improvements to security are expected after the CID completes its investigations. - CNA/vm
