Former Catholic Archbishop Gregory Yong dies of heart failure at age 83

SINGAPORE: The body of former Catholic Archbishop Gregory Yong will be placed at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd at Queen Street on Monday.

The 83-year-old died of heart failure on Saturday afternoon at the St Joseph's Home in Jurong, where he had lived for the past four years.

The former Archbishop was born in Penang, and had served in Malaysia before his appointment in Singapore in 1977.

He suffered a heart attack in June 2000 and underwent bypass surgery. He later retired in October of that year.

The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday followed by the cremation at Mandai Crematorium. - CNA/vm
