SINGAPORE: Over 100,000 people are expected to throng the Marina Bay area during the Formula One race in September and organisers are optimistic that businesses will benefit from the crowd.
However, some of those without race tickets said they would rather give the area a miss during that period.
"Anyway, there'll be no carpark space. We might as well go somewhere else, to the outskirts or heartland malls," one said.
Many who work in the Marina Bay area said they would leave their homes earlier in the morning during the race week, while taxi drivers are wary of the potentially heavy traffic.
"Yes, there will be business, but I won't drive in. It'll be jammed," one of them said.
F1 organisers said it would be best to take the bus or MRT to the Padang, Marina Square or Suntec City during the race week.
They are also working with hotels, shopping malls, offices and places of worship in the area to ensure a smooth flow of human traffic in September.
Aloysius Arlando, assistant chief executive, Business Travel & MICE, Singapore Tourism Board (STB), said: "They can make use of the CityLink Mall to get to Suntec City, Marina Square and Millenia Towers."
STB said hotel guests will be given special car decals so that their taxis can get easier access into the race area. Pan Pacific Hotel said it expects only minimal disruption to guests.
Decals will also be given to office workers who have season parking in affected carparks. Organisers are also in talks with food and beverage tenants to ensure smooth delivery schedules.
