SINGAPORE: Clarke Quay, a food and entertainment venue by the Singapore River, will have a new attraction next month.

A 16-month S$1 million contract will see magician Ning and her partner JC Sum perform stunts twice a day, six days a week at The Arena, a club at Clarke Quay.

The latest attraction is believed to be an effort to spice up nightlife in the area.

In one of the stunts, Ning has to escape from a 10 feet-tall cage within 90 seconds.

That's all the time she has to unlock the chains and shackles to get out, before the 13 stainless steel spikes come crashing down.

Training up to six hours each day, the woman - who claims to be Singapore's first female professional magician - has her own fair share of injuries.

"It is dangerous. Physically, I have had some bruises, I've lost two toenails. It's really painful, with bruises and scrapes," she said.

Organisers say the spikes will be put on the timer on the actual show day and there is no safety catch to stop the spikes from falling should the magician take more than 90 seconds.

Tickets to the 60-minute "Ultimate Magic" show are priced at $55. Sneak previews will start in August, on every Saturday and tickets for those are priced at $40 for adults and $20 for children, inclusive of one drink.

The new show, targeted mainly at tourists, is already drawing interest from travel agencies.

"Tour agencies have given very positive responses that this will be something tourists will like especially in Singapore where we are pretty new and no one has done anything magical like this before," said Ning.

To continue drawing in fresh crowds, JC Sum said that changes in the show will be made quarterly, with "25 per cent of the content (being changed)", in addition to "new illusions, new guest performers and new acts" each time.

The Singapore Tourism Board, which endorses the act, has not responded on how the latest attraction would drive up tourism numbers at Clarke Quay.
