SINGAPORE: The first of six churchgoers involved in an exorcism trial was cross-examined on Wednesday.
Nasrom Abdullah admitted he verbally threatened to hit Amutha Valli Krishnan on the head.
But he said this was after she hurled vulgarities at him on her way to the toilet. The 42-year-old said he lost his temper at Amutha Valli then.
However, he defended himself by saying friends have known him to be mild-tempered, and that he seldom loses his temper.
Nasrom insisted he was calm while praying in the room with Fathers Simon Tan, Jacob Ong and five other churchgoers.
He also denied strangling Amutha Valli.
Former part-time tutor Amutha Valli is suing the Church, two priests and six churchgoers for allegedly performing exorcism on her about four years ago.
She claimed she fainted in church while praying and was led to a room where she was restrained and assaulted.
However, the defendant's version is that her family members had asked the church priests to pray over her because she was possessed and suicidal. She claims the incident had traumatised her and she is now unable to live normally.
The hearing continues on Thursday. - CNA/de
