SINGAPORE : In a condolence letter to family members of the late Dr Ong Chit Chung, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said ministers and fellow MPs grieved over the passing of a valuable son of Singapore who made many contributions in his 20 years as an MP.

The prime minister said Dr Ong was a strong believer in efforts to promote inter-racial harmony in Singapore. And he will be remembered as a steadfast comrade who held true to his values and beliefs, and one who spoke frankly because he cared.

PM Lee said Dr Ong leaves behind many friends who will mourn his sudden loss. But he had lived a full life, made significant contributions to the PAP and to Singapore.

The prime minister hopes that these fond memories will bring strength and solace to Dr Ong's wife and family in their bereavement.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew also sent his condolences to Dr Ong's widow.

He described Dr Ong's death as a "grievous loss" for Mrs Ong, their children and for Singapore.

MM Lee said Dr Ong had made valuable contributions during his five terms in office since becoming a Member of Parliament in 1988.

He added he had lost a good friend. - CNA/ms
