Head of Ren Ci Hospital, Venerable Shi Ming Yi charged in court

SINGAPORE: Ren Ci Hospital CEO Venerable Shi Ming Yi voluntarily resigned on Monday, according to a statement from the hospital.

He had been on leave since mid-February, when the Commercial Affairs Department started investigations on the charity, based on preliminary findings by the Health Ministry.

The statement added that a manager, David Phua Seow Hwa, has been suspended from his official duties.

Phua, who was charged in court today, together with Venerable Ming Yi and another man, faces one charge of abetment of falsification of accounts.

Ren Ci Hospital, in the statement, pledged its continued commitment to the welfare of its patients and staff, and the smooth running of its clinical services. It also appealed to the public and to its volunteers to continue to support Ren Ci.

Its Clinical Director, Dr Ong Seh Hong, who covered Venerable Ming Yi's duties during the past five months, will continue to do so.

Separately, the Health Ministry has said that it will continue to support the Ren Ci Board - which is led by Chua Thian Poh - to ensure that Ren Ci's good work for its patients continues.

Its subsidies to Ren Ci will ensure that patient care and medical treatment will not be affected. It noted that Mr Chua has invited several new members onto the Board to strengthen its governance. Ren Ci has also made some improvements as recommended by its auditor.

The ministry is studying a request for an increased capital grant to help Ren Ci cope with the costs of constructing the new Ren Ci Hospital, due to be completed in December.

It is also looking at closer cooperation with Ren Ci through a Memorandum of Understanding. It aims for deeper collaboration between Ren Ci and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, located just beside the charity, to deliver more seamless and integrated care.
