SINGAPORE: A new initiative was unveiled on Wednesday to help Singapore apparel manufacturers expand overseas.

A new industry brand, Apparel Singapore, has been launched by the Textile and Fashion Federation. For a start, nine firms will represent Singapore as brand ambassadors.

These firms are Asia Garment Manufacturer, Bodynits International, Clovertex, Ghim Li Global, Gimmill Industrial, Lee Yin Knitting Factory, Ocean Sky International, SL Global, and Teo Garments.

The aim of setting up an industry brand is to help promote local products to overseas markets like the United States, Japan and Europe.

Popular brands like Nike, Adidas and Gap are just some of the names that Singapore apparel manufacturers supply to.

Benny Pua, president of the Textile and Fashion Federation, said: "Apparel Singapore represents a strategic and unique collaboration of a group of leading Singapore apparel manufacturers, where they act as one voice, one face and one value in the global market."

Over the next six months, Apparel Singapore will be introduced to the US and Japan.

Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang said: "The brand ambassadors will carry the Apparel Singapore seal of trust alongside their own company logos. They will be recognised as trusted business partners that respect intellectual property rights and comply with strict social environmental standards."

International buyers can look to the 'Managed by Singapore' trademark throughout the entire process – from design conceptualisation to product development and distribution.

Elaine Pang, general manager of Macy's Merchandising Group, Singapore, said: "Singapore's apparel companies have been here for a long time. They've been here for more than 30 years and they've evolved to be world-class players.

"They're able to offer us a full package sourcing. That means they can provide product design, product development, multiple countries of manufacturing, good quality and on-time delivery. So, we're very pleased and many of the key manufacturers are our five-star suppliers."

In 2007, Singapore-based apparel manufacturers' output totalled about S$6 billion. This accounts for 2 per cent of the world's apparel industry.

Industry players said they expect to see further growth with the new Singapore brand.
