SINGAPORE : Two hundred students from the Singapore Management University and Jurong Junior College attempted to go around the world in a day, without leaving Singapore.

They aimed to cover 40,000 kilometres - which is the circumference of the globe - in 24 hours. They will do so by completing 100,000 laps around the track at Toa Payoh Stadium by jogging, wheeling, or spinning on stationary bicycles.

The event - Trilympics 2008 - is held in support of disability sports and Singapore's athletes taking part in the upcoming Beijing Paralympics. It was inaugurated in 2006 as part of the Olympic Dream Series.

Guest-of-Honour MP Josephine Teo also joined wheelchair athletes and students to mark the official opening of this year's Trilympics.

Trilympics 2008 will end at 1pm on July 20. - CNA /ls
