MediaCorp and Odex start new online anime channel on MOBTV.sg

SINGAPORE: Anime lovers living outside of anime heaven – Japan - will be in virtual heaven come July 21 as they will no longer have to wait for DVDs to be released to catch the latest from Japan.

This is all thanks to a new collaboration between Singapore’s leading media company, MediaCorp, and Odex, the largest anime licensee and anime programme distributor for the territories of Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Brunei.

"Odex has all this while been engaging copyright owners over the possibility of same week telecast and to see this become a reality calls for celebration in the anime industry," said Mr Peter Go, Managing Director of Odex Pte Ltd.

The most up-to-date Japanese animated cartoons will now be shown on MediaCorp’s Arts Central, the first and only terrestrial television channel in the world to broadcast anime content within the same week as its premiere in Japan.

The channel will air anime titles, including "Neo Angelique Abyss", "D. Gray-man" and "Zero No Tsukaima: Princesses no Rondo", in a belt from Wednesday to Friday from 11pm to midnight.

At the same time, for a monthly subscription fee of S$10, anime fans can tap into a newly launched online anime channel AnimeTrix, which will be available on demand at MOBTV.sg. It will offer viewers 90 hours worth of the widest range of content online outside of Japan.

This includes immediate access online to a range of six cult titles, including Domo, Seto no Hanayome (My Bride is a Mermaid), and Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (How to Make a Cinderella).

"With this collaboration, we are better able to cater to the entertainment needs and changing lifestyles of our audiences," said Chang Long Jong, MediaCorp Deputy CEO (Television).

AnimeTrix fans now have an even greater variety of choice which goes beyond the boundaries of traditional media.

So, look out for ‘riskier’ titles such as Tokyo Majin series, which has an M18 rating due to its violent graphics and storyline.

The growing anime fan base in Singapore will also be delighted to know that ODEX hopes to grow the number of titles that are available to viewers in the near future.
