SINGAPORE: Bringing home the point about enjoying life in the golden years - that's what this year's Active Ageing Festival promises.
Soh Geok Kee, Founder, Kallang Community Drumming Club, said: "I was inspired by drum circles in the US, and so when I came back, I said I would like to promote this."
Having established their niche at the Kallang Community Club, the group have been invited to perform at several functions.
Meanwhile, Singapore's official Elvis Presley fan club is keeping "The King's" legacy alive.
Daniel Chan, Founder, Singapore’s First Elvis Fan Club, said: "We perform for the CC and private functions. Sometimes, they want me to impersonate Elvis also."
These performers will be in action at the Active Ageing Festival, which kick off on August 23 at the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.
Organisers, Council for Third Age, are expecting up to 20,000 visitors over the two-day carnival, up from 6,000 last year.
For the first time, the festival will target the heartlands, where organisers want to encourage Singaporeans to practise long-term financial planning.
Gerard Ee, Chairman, Council for Third Age, said: "You'd better start planning and saving for it. Start to have a healthy lifestyle, so that when you're 65 or 70, you have the savings and you have the energy to enjoy yourself and live out your dreams."
The council will also have roadshows to spread the "active ageing, active living" message.
The festival will also include the annual Active Agers Award dinner, held at the historic Cavenagh Bridge, to recognise role model seniors.
It will end on November 23 at the Esplanade Park, where families can celebrate Grandparents' Day with perks like a special parade and concession rides on the Singapore Flyer. - CNA/vm
