SINGAPORE: The protracted Amutha Valli alleged exorcism trial is another step closer to conclusion.

The last witness, Amutha's general practitioner, Dr Karthika Hanafi from Flame Tree Medical Centre, completed her testimony on Wednesday.

Some 30 witnesses, including the plaintiff and defendants, have taken the stand since the trial began last October.

Lawyers from both sides will present their closing arguments this October.

Amutha Valli, a former part-time tutor, is suing Novena Church, two priests and six churchgoers for performing an alleged exorcism on her on 10 August 2004.

She contends she fainted in church while praying and was led to a room where she was restrained and assaulted.

However, the defendants insist that her family members had asked the church priests to pray over her because she was possessed and suicidal.

She claims the incident had traumatised her and she is now unable to live normally. - CNA/vm
