SINGAPORE: The Commonwealth Women's Antarctic Expedition is looking for women from Singapore to join an all-female team skiing to the South Pole next year.

The eight-woman team will represent the Commonwealth countries of Cyprus, Ghana, India, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand, Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

They will ski more than 500 miles (805 kilometres) across the Antarctic to reach the South Pole on New Year's Day 2010.

The organisers said the 30- to 50-day journey will not be easy. It will involve sleeping in tents in temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius, pulling sledges weighing 80 kilogrammes, and enduring vicious snowstorms.

The Singaporean woman selected to join the team will have the honour of planting the Singapore flag at the South Pole. She will also be the first Singaporean woman to ski to the South Pole.

Candidates from Singapore can make their applications on the expedition website at
www.commonwealthexpedition.com.

The closing date for applications is Friday, 15 August 2008. Short-listed applicants will be interviewed in September. - CNA/vm
