SINGAPORE : Seventeen scientists, engineers and researchers have been honoured at this year's National Science and Technology Awards.

Among the winners are Professor Tan Chorh Chuan and Mr Say Kwee Teck, who received the National Science and Technology Medals - the country's highest honour in these fields.

Both have made significant contributions to research and development in Singapore.

According to the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Professor Tan has played an important role in the development of Singapore's biomedical sciences initiative.

The agency said Professor Tan is the key driver of the initiative's second phase, which focuses on translational medical research.

The other winner, Mr Say, is Senior Vice President of Engineering Research and Development at Seagate Technology International.

He is being recognised for establishing a world-class team of research engineers and leading industry developments for Singapore.

Two National Science Awards, two National Technology Awards and three Young Scientist Awards have also been given out to 15 recipients comprising three teams and four individuals.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Lim Hng Kiang, presented the awards at the Raffles City Convention Centre. - CNA/ms
