SINGAPORE: From next year, all junior colleges and the Millennia Institute will start the school term for Year 1 students with a single intake in end January or early February.

For 2009, Year 1 students will start school on February 2 and Year 2 students on January 12.

Currently, there are two intakes for first year students: one in January that is based on school preliminary examination results, and another in March based on 'O' level results.

The Ministry of Education said the two-intake exercise results in a high turn-over of students in March as quite a number of junior college students switch courses or colleges after receiving their 'O' level results.

So with the single intake, it will reduce the waiting time for some 'O' level graduates, who may otherwise need to wait for three months before entering junior college or the Millennia Institute.

To facilitate the single-intake, the 'O' level results, which are currently released in late January, will be released in early January.

Posting results from the Joint Admissions Exercise will be released earlier at the end of January instead of mid-February.
