SINGAPORE : Some 500 officers from the Singapore and Indonesian navies spent the past four days providing community services to the people in Padang, Indonesia.
The navy officers were taking part in the 57th Surya Bhaskara Jaya, a humanitarian assistance programme by the Indonesian navy.
The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has been taking part in the programme since 1997. Among the RSN personnel involved are 46 midshipmen from the Landing Ship Tank RSS Persistence.
Medical teams from the two navies provided primary health and dental care for the residents in Padang.
Surgical operations were carried out on board the RSS Persistence and the Indonesian navy's hospital ship, KRI Dr Soeharso.
The officers also distributed essential food items such as rice, oil and milk powder, educational materials and sports equipment to the residents.
They also carried out repair works at a community hall, and volleyball and badminton courts.
The Singapore Ministry of Defence said the Singapore navy's participation in the programme reflects its excellent ties with its Indonesian counterpart.
It added that regular interactions and close cooperation have helped to foster professional respect and mutual understanding among officers of the two navies. - CNA/ms
