DPM Wong to visit Tianjin and Beijing

TIANJIN, China: Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng is on a five-day visit to China at the invitation of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan.

He arrived at his first stop in Tianjin on Tuesday afternoon, where he met the Tianjin Party Secretary Zhang Gaoli.

It is Mr Wong's second trip to the city in 11 years, but his first official visit.

Mr Zhang assured Mr Wong that Singapore has made the right decision to build the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, as the city is fast developing its industries and infrastructure.

On Wednesday, Mr Wong will co-chair the inaugural Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Joint Steering Council meeting with Mr Wang.

The two leaders will take stock of the progress and chart directions for the project.

On Thursday, they will also co-chair two meetings to discuss the progress of the Suzhou Industrial Park and bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Mr Wong is accompanied by seven Singapore ministers. - CNA/ms
