Former Singaporean lawyer Gopalan Nair out on bail

SINGAPORE : Blogger and former Singaporean lawyer, Gopalan Nair, has been ordered to pay fines amounting to S$3,000 for being abusive towards police officers and for behaving in a disorderly manner.

Nair, who is now a US citizen, was found guilty of the two charges on Friday after an 18-day trial.

The incidents happened on July 4 this year at the junction of Race Course Road and Bukit Timah Road.

According to the prosecution, 58-year-old Nair became abusive and refused to furnish his particulars when interviewed by plainclothes police officers who had been conducting routine anti-crime operations in the area.

The former Workers' Party election candidate had his bail of S$5,000 raised to S$8,000, pending the appeal he intends to file.

Nair will be back in court next week when his trial for insulting two High Court judges begins. - CNA/ms
