SINGAPORE: Southeast Asia's longest underground road tunnel saw its first car rally on Saturday morning.

The aim was to familiarise users with the 12-kilometre long Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), of which nine kilometres are below ground.

Cars kept within the speed limit of 70 kilometres an hour as they faced a series of challenges.

Teams were assessed on how effectively they used the KPE to shorten their route and whether they practised safe driving habits.

About 400 participants went to various checkpoints to complete their tasks. These included eating eggs and peanuts in the shortest time possible.

There will be more tunnel fun on September 14, with a carnival and other activities.

The tunnel will be fully operational on September 20 following a successful Phase 1, which was opened to traffic last October. - CNA/vm
