SINGAPORE: Over 500 people are taking turns over the weekend to cycle 30,000 kilometres in 30 hours.

This spinning, or stationary cycling event was organised by the Singapore Management University (SMU).

It hopes to raise a dollar for each kilometre clocked to help those with muscular dystrophy.

The participants will be cheered on by performances from SMU students and local bands.

SMU hopes to raise S$30,000, with all proceeds going towards the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore.

The fundraiser started at noon on Saturday at the Plaza Singapura Outdoor Atrium and ends on Sunday at 6pm.

Separately, two students from Hwa Chong Institution teamed up with Yuhua constituency to organise a basketball competition aimed at strengthening community bonding among residents.

The project was part of their compulsory curriculum project.

The students chose Yuhua constituency as it has a passionate basketball committee that has organised multiple basketball competitions in the past.

Chairman of Yuhua Basketball Club Simon Yeo said the students were keen to bring the community closer through sports, and it offered a good opportunity to engage youths in community work.

Besides the two students from Hwa Chong Institution, the competition was also organised by the Yuhua Basketball Club and Yuhua Residents' Committees Zone 1 to 7.

The Yuhua Citizens' Consultative Committee and Yuhua Community Club Management Committee are also lending their support for the Yuhua Constituency Basketball Challenge 2008.

The competition ended on September 6. - CNA/vm/ls
