SINGAPORE: Former Singaporean lawyer Gopalan Nair was back in court on Monday for allegedly insulting two High Court judges – Belinda Ang and Lai Sui Chiu.
Nair's offence against Justice Lai was stood down immediately as the public prosecutor claimed that the two charges were "not of a similar nature".
An email sent by Nair to Justice Lai had allegedly accused the judge and her peers of "selling their souls and their conscience for money".
The 58-year-old former Workers' Party candidate pleaded not guilty to the charge against Justice Ang.
Nair had written on his blog in May this year about a court hearing involving Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and the Singapore Democratic Party that was presided by Justice Ang.
Among other things, Nair wrote in his blog that "Judge Belinda Ang was throughout prostituting herself during the entire proceedings".
Nair appealed to have the current hearing adjourned for two days, claiming that he needed time to settle another court case.
He was fined S$3,000 by the Subordinate Court last Friday for disorderly behaviour and for using abusive words towards police officers, and he claimed he needed more time to transfer money from the United States, where he is based.
Moreover, Nair said he planned to call upon seven witnesses for the case against Justice Ang and needed more time to prepare them.
He also asked for portions of an audio tape and transcripts of Justice Ang's hearing to be made available in court, which Justice Kan Ting Chiu allowed.
Nair was granted an adjournment and will be back in court on Wednesday. His hearing is expected to last ten days.
