SINGAPORE: She played mother to 43 foster children over the last 32 years. And had it not been for ill health, Singapore's model foster mother would have kept on going.
For more than three decades, Mdm Indranee Nadisen and her family opened their hearts and home to babies and children who were neglected or abused.
Her foster children, whose identities are protected, gathered together recently for a surprise party organised by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports in her honour.
She is 68 and she holds the record for caring for the most number of children under the ministry's fostering scheme.
Her actions prompted the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, to propose that she be named an honorary foster mother.
He said through her giving ways, Mdm Indranee has greatly raised the profile of the ministry's fostering scheme.
Mdm Indranee said: "For parents to become foster parents, I would like to tell them (that) they must have patience first. Second, love. Third, co-operation from the family. If there is no co-operation from the family, the child cannot stay in the foster house."
The fostering scheme has been in place since 1956. There are now 184 foster parents caring for 300 children, and the ministry hopes more Singaporeans will follow in Mdm Indranee's footsteps. - CNA/de
