SINGAPORE : Team Singapore has put in its best performance ever at the 13th Paralympic Games in Beijing, which ended with a spectacular closing ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Yip Pin Xiu was the favourite to win the 50-metre backstroke event after setting a new world record in the heats. And she lived up to her expectations.
Yip made it to the finish line first, much to the delight of her fans.
For the first time in history, a Paralympic gold medal was presented to a Singapore citizen.
Yip also swam her way to silver in the 50-metre freestyle event, after she broke another world record in the heats.
But she wasn't the only Singapore medallist at the Paralympic Games
Rider Laurentia Tan was the first Singaporean to win a medal, picking up two bronze medals in the equestrian events.
Singapore's best known paralympic athlete Theresa Goh came in second overall during the heats of the 100-metre breaststroke, but missed out on a medal in the finals, coming in fourth.
The team's success at the Paralympic Games has brought long-awaited attention to disability sports in Singapore, and will likely inspire the next generation of disabled paralympians. - CNA /ls
