SINGAPORE: Former Singaporean lawyer Gopalan Nair was sentenced to three months' jail on Wednesday.

The 58-year-old, who is now an American citizen, was found guilty of insulting High Court judge Justice Belinda Ang, in a blog posting on May 29.

This was in reference to a three-day court hearing, which assessed damages in a defamation suit that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew won against the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), its chief Chee Soon Juan and his sister Chee Siok Chin.

Nair, now out on a S$5,000 bail, had asked to delay his sentence by three days to settle personal affairs.

Justice Kan ordered him to surrender to the High Court bail centre by noon on Saturday.

It was not clear if Nair, who declined to speak to reporters, would appeal.
