Nestle says its Chinese products free from melamine contamination

SINGAPORE: The Singapore arm of dairy giant Nestle said it does not import any milk powder from China.

In a media statement, Nestle Singapore said all its milk powders sold in Singapore are sourced from Australia, New Zealand, Europe or the United States.

This also applies to its dairy-based products, which include Milo, ice-cream and yoghurt.

The milk powders it sells here include Nan, Lactogen, Neslac, Nespray, Nesvita, Nestle Everyday and Nestle Omega Plus.

The company also said Hong Kong's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has given the green light to Neslac Gold 1+ sold in the territory, which had been cited in some media reports as being adulterated with melamine.

This all-clear was also confirmed by tests carried last week by independent government-approved laboratories in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Neslac Gold 1+ from China is not sold in Singapore.

The company said consumers can also contact its call centre at 6836-7200 during office hours.

Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia, the Singapore distributor of Dutch Lady milk said it's still too early to determine the financial impact of the recall of its China-sterilised product.

Friesland Foods said it will refund consumers and retailers for the affected products with no conditions attached.

It reiterated that the only product found to be tainted with melamine is the strawberry flavoured milk produced by Tianjin Dutch Lady Dairy Foods Co. Ltd. But as a precaution, milk in all flavours and pack sizes produced by that China company have been recalled.

It assured consumers that apart from the bottled milk produced in China, all other Dutch Lady products and brands remain safe for consumption.

The company has set up a hotline for consumer and retailer queries which will be operated during office hours from September 22 to 26. The number is 6419-8466. - CNA/vm
