SINGAPORE : The first day of F1-related road closures in the Marina Bay area has turned into a traffic nightmare for some, with road users stuck in traffic jams for up to an hour during the morning rush hour.

The roads around the F1 street circuit were closed past midnight on Tuesday, but many motorists were caught unaware when they travelled to the Marina Bay area in the morning.

One of the hotspots was the section of Beach Road leading to Stamford Road.

Some motorists blamed the traffic gridlock on the lack of publicity and information.

"Traffic today is a bit (chaotic). Maybe they can publish more street directions on the routes for the cars," said one motorist.

Some despatch riders complained that they were delayed by half an hour, and many office workers in the area said they were late for work by an hour.

"Maybe I will start a bit early, and I hope (things) will improve tomorrow. (It) should have been communicated a bit better on which way to take," said one motorist.

"I will probably still drive but I'll use another road maybe. They should station more traffic police around for the traffic directions," said another.

A map of the affected areas can be downloaded from the Land Transport Authority's
website.

For safety reasons, police have asked motorists not to stop along the stretch of road from Republic Avenue to Raffles Avenue during the morning rush hour from September 23 to October 1, between 5am and 9 am. The road is opened to facilitate motorists heading to Shenton Way during the road closures for the Singapore Formula One night race.
