SINGAPORE: The Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia has upped the ante in the fight for greater marketshare on the lucrative Singapore-Kuala Lumpur (KL) route.
It is not only offering free seats but also waiving fuel surcharges.
This means its customers will only have to pay airport taxes and admin charges.
AirAsia has been one of the most aggressive budget carriers in the region, rapidly expanding and taking on its competitors head-on.
Budget carriers were granted access to the tightly-controlled Singapore-KL route in February 2008, and even then the flights have been limited.
But further liberalisation will come on December 1.
Tiger Airways and Jetstar have announced they are increasing their services and they will also be offering zero-fare seats to attract passengers.
AirAsia is adding four additional daily flights on the sector, taking the total number of daily flights it has to six.
Flights on the Singapore-KL sector have been known to be costly, but with the entry of the budget players, there is definitely going to be increasing pressure on price.
