SINGAPORE: Lighter and smarter cars, which are more environmentally friendly are the future of the car industry.

And a new consortium called A*CAR, or the A*STAR Capabilities for Automotive Research, seeks to build up research capabilities in this area.

To do this, A*STAR, or the Agency for Science, Technology and Research has joined with major players of the global automative industry - Bosch, Dou Yee, Infineon and Th!nk Global.

The consortium is open to all companies in the automotive industry and members will have access to R&D results in pre-competitive research.

The aim is to strengthen the local supplier industry and to give Singapore a headstart in this area.

A*STAR said the global automotive industry is the world's largest manufacturing industry, worth more than US$750 billion. - CNA/vm
