SINGAPORE : President SR Nathan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong have sent their congratulations to their Chinese counterparts as China prepares to celebrate its 59th National Day on Wednesday.

In a letter to China's President Hu Jintao, Mr Nathan said that China has made remarkable economic growth, progress and stability under Mr Hu's "wise stewardship".

Mr Nathan highlighted President Hu's leadership in helping China through the Sichuan earthquake and congratulated China for hosting a "most spectacular and successful Olympics".

President Nathan said that during a discussion with President Hu last month, he was heartened to see that bilateral relations have flourished in many areas including economics, politics, defence and social ties.

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city project and the conclusion of the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement will be yet another indication of the dynamic and maturing ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Lee also highlighted the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city project in a letter to Premier Wen Jiabao.

Mr Lee said the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement will not only facilitate the flow of goods between the two countries, but also enhance people-to-people exchanges.

He said that China responded well to several challenges this year, especially the Sichuan earthquake in May, with the country emerging stronger from its challenges.

Mr Lee also congratulated Premier Wen on putting together a spectacular Olympic Games and for the impressive performance of the Chinese athletes. - CNA/ms
