SINGAPORE : One of the two men who made a dash for freedom from the lock-up at the Subordinate Courts in Singapore has been sentenced to 12 years' corrective training and 24 strokes of the cane.
The court found 29-year-old Salman Abu Samah suitable for corrective training - a regime for repeat offenders, which offers no chance of early release, even for good behaviour.
His accomplice, 32-year-old Jamaluddin Salam, is due to be sentenced on October 17.
The attempted escape happened in June. Both Jamaluddin and Salman had assaulted police Corporal Donnie Lim before making a dash out of the Subordinate Courts.
The pair ran through the court's public area. Salman was finally nabbed at the court's main entrance, while Jamaluddin was caught 50 metres away, near the Family Court.
A Criminal Investigation Department probe of the attempted escape is ongoing. - CNA/ms
